주 안에서 사랑하는 기도 가족에게 올립니다.

할렐루야! 하나님이 하시는 놀라운 일을 알리며 이 편지를 기도 가족에게 올립니다. 한마음 한뜻으로 하나님의 뜻을 구하는 기도를 외면하지 않으시고, 언제 어디서든 세심히 들으시고 침묵하지 않으시며 하나님의 때에 드러내신다는 것을 지금도 체험합니다. 라브리를 위해 각자의 자리에서 정기적으로, 혹은 생각날 때마다, 혼자서 또는 모여서 기도하는 것을 하나님은 기뻐하심에 틀림 없습니다. 모든 기도에 하나님 뜻대로 응답하시는 것을 믿기에, 지금도 기도해 주시는 기도 가족 여러분에게 진심으로 감사하고 또 행복합니다.

10년이 넘도록 기도해온 손님용 남녀 화장실 분리 공사를 드디어 시작할 수 있게 되었습니다. 오랫동안 기도하던 중, 한 분이 보내준 씨앗 헌금 300만 원을 시작으로, 라브리 채플 성도들이 모은 헌금 1,000만 원에 이어, 미국의 메리 맥케인(Mary McCain) 여사의 유산 $30,000까지 전 세계를 움직이며 일하신 하나님의 손길에 놀라 어안이 벙벙할 따름입니다. 이 모든 것이 지난 2주 만에 이루어진 일입니다. 참으로 놀랍지요?

오래된 이 건물을 직접 관리하고 유지하시는 아버지의 손길이 느껴집니다. 화장실 공사에 이어 지난번 옹벽 공사 때 공사대금 부족으로 마무리 짓지 못한 백암당 뒤 옹벽 공사 또한 마무리 지을 계획입니다. 이 모든 공사의 처음부터 마지막까지 하나님이 직접 관리, 감독하셔서 안전하고 튼튼하며 편리한 공간이 되도록 기도를 또 부탁드립니다.

토방에 물을 뿌리면 연기가 날 정도로 한여름 더위가 기승인 가운데에도 7월 14일부터 여름학기를 맞은 이곳에 참으로 많은 분이 방문하고 있습니다. 부천 예인교회 청년들 10여 명이 방문하여 더위도 마다하지 않고 공부하고 라브리 앞마당을 깨끗이 정리하고는 “살아있는 기독교를 경험했다.”는 말을 들을 때는 이 무더위도 시원하게 느껴질 정도였습니다.

피부병을 얻은 목회자로부터 정신질환을 앓고 있는 학생까지, 모두 하나님이 주시는 위로와 권면이 필요한 분들이었습니다. 자녀의 병을 인정하기 어려운 부모에게 정직하게 현재의 자녀 상태를 알리고 현실적으로 도움이 되는 대책을 제안하는 것은 참으로 마음이 아팠습니다. 그러나 그 학생이 자신의 상태를 인식하고 정신과 병원의 도움을 받기로 한 것은 성령님의 도우심 때문임을 고백하지 않을 수 없습니다. 이번 여름학기에는, 주님을 위해 열정과 뜨거운 믿음을 가지고 평생 일하신 분들의 자녀들이 신체적, 정신적, 심리적, 관계적으로 어려움을 겪거나 예수님을 버리거나 믿지 못하고 방황하는 청년들이 많이 찾아왔습니다. 그 원인을 분석하고 도울 방법을 연구하는 일이 매우 시급하고 중요합니다. 아직도 남은 두 주 동안 방문하실 여름 학기 손님들을 위해 기도해 주시길 부탁드립니다.

며칠 전에 성경 읽기 시간에는 손님들과 데살로니가 전·후서를 소리 내 읽었습니다. 바울 사도는 데살로니가 성도들이“믿음이 더욱 자라고 서로 사랑함이 풍성”(데살로니가후서 1:3) 하여, 바울 사도도 감사를 표했습니다. 그런데도 사도는 몇 가지 당부를 아끼지 않았습니다.

믿음이 굳건하고 서로 사랑하는 데살로니가 성도들이라고 할지라도, 예수님의 재림과 성도의 부활에 대한 소망이 없이 이 땅에서 평안을 추구하는 삶에 만족하며 살지 않도록 서로를 격려하고 위로하라고 했습니다.
‘평안하다, 안전하다’라고 말하며 영적으로 잠을 자는 성도들이 생길 수 있음을 경고하며, “너희는 다 빛의 아들이요 낮의 아들이라 우리가 밤이나 어둠에 속하지 아니하나니 그러므로 우리는 다른 이들과 같이 자지 말고 오직 깨어 정신을 차릴지라”(데살로니가전서 5:5-6)라고 외쳤습니다.
게으른 사람들이나 일하기 싫어하는 사람들은, 공짜로 뭔가를 바라지 말고, 다른 사람들에게 폐를 끼치지 말고, 주야로 일해서 다른 이들에게 폐를 끼치지 않았던 바울 전도팀을 본받으라고 당부했습니다. (데살로니가후서 3:7-8) 당연히 수고비를 받을 권리가 있었지만, 사도들은 자발적으로 그것을 포기하고 손수 일하며 전도했습니다.

현대를 살아가는 우리도 하나님 나라와 영생에 대한 소망이 없다면 여러 한계와 죽음으로 인해 허무할 것입니다. 예수님을 머리로 한 여러 지체들의 격려와 권면의 균형도 깨질 것입니다. 기독교의 바르고 선한 영향이 이 땅 곳곳에 퍼져나가 우리와 다음 세대가 예수님과 함께 굳건히 서 나갈 수 있도록 기도 부탁드립니다.

저는 7년 넘게 섬겼던 라브리를 떠나 새로운 곳으로 옮겨 주님이 주시는 소명을 감당하려고 합니다. 몇 가지 이유로 이제는 라브리 사역을 마쳐야겠다고 결심하게 되었습니다. 첫 번째는 싱글 여성이 일하기에는 심리적인 외로움과 구조적인 어려움이 있었습니다. 두 번째는 코로나 기간에 하나님의 은혜로 배우게 된 상담과 복지 분야에서 아픈 청소년, 청년, 가정들을 돕고 싶기 때문입니다.

라브리는 저에게 기독교가 종교가 아닌 삶이라는 바른 진리를 가르쳐 준 영적 고향입니다. 함께 부대끼며 일했던 간사들과 헤어지는 것은 몸속 장기 하나가 없어지는 것 같습니다. 그러나 예수님 안에서 한 지체로 어디에 있든지 주를 위하여 일하는 동역자로 만남을 이어가려고 합니다. 라브리에서 배운 것을 삶에 적용하며, 바울이 데살로니가 성도들에게 당부했던 것을 마음에 새기고 기독교 세계관을 실천하며 살아가려고 합니다.

근 8년 만에 사회에 다시 발을 내딛게 되는 것에 대해 두려움도 있으나 성령님을 의지하며 한 걸음 한 걸음 나아가려고 합니다. 그동안 저를 위해 기도해 주시고 아낌없는 사랑을 베풀어 주신 기도 가족 여러분에게 진심으로 감사드립니다. 이 땅 어디에선가 만나는 것도 기쁜 일이지만 이곳에서 만나지 못하더라고 천국에서 반갑게 만나기를 소망합니다.

폭염경보가 내려진 상황에서도 라브리 학기를 돕고 있는 태윤, 현지 부부를 위해서 기도 부탁드립니다. 현지씨는 임신 초기입니다. 이 더위에 쓰러지지 않고 아이와 산모 모두 건강할 수 있도록 기도해 주세요. 격주마다 라브리의 넓은 마당의 풀을 깨끗이 깍아 주시는 문재용 집사님을 위해서도 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 여전히 라브리를 지키고 계신 인경, 경옥 간사를 위해서, 라브리에서 일할 간사가 속히 구해지기를, 그리고 사회에 발을 내디디는 저를 위해 기도 부탁드리며 기도 가족 여러분의 가정과 하시는 일에 주님의 평안이 가득하길 소망합니다. 머리 숙여 감사를 드리며, 라브리를 떠납니다.

Dear praying family,

Hallelujah!

I am writing this letter to share of the wonderful things that God is doing. It is still my experience that when we seek the will of God with one heart and one mind through prayer, God listens carefully, anytime and anywhere, does not remain silent, and reveals Himself in His time. There is no doubt that God is pleased when we pray for L’Abri regularly or whenever we think of it, and whether we pray individually or in groups for it. Because I believe that God answers all prayers according to His will, I am sincerely grateful and happy for our prayer family who still continues prays for us.

We are finally able to start construction for separate male and female guest bathrooms, which we have been praying about for more than 10 years. During this long period of praying, God’s hand moved and worked all over the world, starting with a seed offering of $2,150 sent by one person, followed by a donation of $7,145 from members of L’Abri Chapel, and then with the legacy of Mary McCain from the United States of $30,000. I am amazed and dumbfounded by how God works. Apart from the prayers, all of this happened in the past two weeks. Isn’t it so surprising?

I can sense the Father’s hand in managing and maintaining this old building. Following the bathroom construction, we plan to finish the retaining wall behind Baekamdang, which could not be completed last time due to lack of construction funds. Please pray that God would manage and supervise all the construction from the beginning to the end so that the space will be safe, strong, and convenient.

Since the start of the second summer term on July 14th, many people have been visiting, even though the middle of the summer has been so hot that the ground steams if you sprinkle water on it. About 10 youth from Yein Church in Bucheon visited. They studied without hesitation in the heat and cleaning up the front yard, and when I heard them say they “experienced living Christianity,” even the heat wave felt cool.

From a pastor with a skin disease to a student struggling with mental health, everyone needed God’s comfort and counsel. It was truly heartbreaking to suggest helpful measures to parents who were finding it difficult to accept their child’s illness and current condition. However, I cannot deny that it was through the help of the Holy Spirit that the student recognized his condition and decided to seek help from a psychiatric hospital.

During this summer semester, many of our visitors were youth who have worked for the Lord with passion and fervent faith and who have experienced physical, mental, psychological, and relational difficulties or have abandoned Jesus or wandered away from Him. This makes understanding and analyzing the causes and studying ways to help more urgent and important. Please pray for the summer guests who will be visiting during the remaining two weeks.

During Bible study a few days ago, I read 1 and 2 Thessalonians aloud with our guests. The apostle Paul expresses thanks that the Thessalonian saints’ faith is “growing abundantly, and the love of everyone for you for one another is increasing” (2 Thessalonians 1:3). Even so, the apostle doesn’t spare making a few requests.

Even though the Thessalonian believers are firm in their faith and love one another, they are told to encourage and comfort each other so that they don’t live contently on earth without hoping in the second coming of Christ and the resurrection of the saints.
Paul warns that there be may some who are spiritually asleep and say, “There is peace and safety.” In response, he writes, “For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, aa others do, but let us keep awake and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:5-6).
Paul warns against idleness by saying not to expect anything for free from lazy people or people who don’t like to work. Rather, they ought to imitate the Pauline evangelism team who worked night and day and were not a burden (2 Thessalonians 3:7-8). Of course, they had the right to receive payment for their labor, but the apostles voluntarily gave it up and preached while working with their own hands.

If we who live in modern times do not have hope for the kingdom of God and for eternal life, everything will be futile due to various limitations and death. The balance of encouragement and exhortation between members with Jesus as the head will also be broken. Please pray that the right and good influence of Christianity spreads throughout the land so that we and the coming generations can stand firm in Jesus.

After serving at L’Abri for more than 7 years, I will be leaving L’Abri to move to a new place and to fulfill the calling He has given me. There were several reasons for my decision to wrap up my time with L’Abri ministry. First, as a single woman working here, I experienced loneliness and structural difficulties. Second, I want to help sick teenagers, young people, and families by being in the field of counseling and welfare, which, by the grace of God, I learned about and trained in during the coronavirus period.

To me, L'Abri is a spiritual home that taught me the true truths that Christianity is life, not religion. Parting with the staff I worked together with feels like losing an organ in my body. However, as one body in Christ, we will continue to meet as co-workers who work for the Lord, wherever we are. I am going to apply what I have learned at L’Abri to my life, keeping in mind what Paul commanded the Thessalonian saints and living by practicing the Christian worldview.

I am afraid of transitioning back into society, but I am going to take things one step at a time as I rely on the Holy Spirit. I sincerely thank the prayer family for praying for me and giving me unsparing love all this time. It’s a pleasure to meet anywhere on earth, but if we can’t meet here, I hope to meet you in heaven.

Please pray for Tae-yoon and Hyeon-ji, the young couple helping this semester despite the heat wave warnings. Hyeon-ji is in her early stages of pregnancy. Please pray that she doesn’t faint in the heat and that both she and the child will be healthy. Please also pray for Deacon Jae-yong Moon, who cuts the grass of L’Abri’s large yard every other week. Please pray for InKyung and KyungOk, for staffs to work at L’Abri, and for me as I step out into society.

I hope the Lord’s peace will fill your family and the work you do. I bow my head in gratitude as I leave L’Abri.
